Lady Miners “Cobble” together a victory
A pair of run-scoring singles off the bat of Payton Cobble would be all the Linton-Stockton Lady Miners needed to conquer the North Knox Lady Warriors.
Cobble drove in both Lady Miner runs as Linton-Stockton (12-11) edged North Knox (12-12) 2-0 in softball action Tuesday at Linton.
“We managed to get the runs across we needed to,” Linton coach Ruan Fougerousse said.
“Payton was a definite positive. We will probably utilize her more in that capacity.”
In the home half of the first frame Brantli Lannan drilled a single through the box. Hannah Frady found the hole between third and short, putting runners on first and second ahead of Cobble. The spohomore designated player lined a single to right center plating Lannan.
In the second inning Linton had runners at second and third but were unable to capitalize. Catcher Sierra Flater drew a base on balls. Alexis James laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Flater. Ashlyn Ferree smacked a base hit to left and took second on the throw to third. Both runners were left standing.
Cobble came through again in the bottom of the third. Frady’s pop fly to left fell in for a double. Cobble roped a hard hit shot to right field driving in Frady.
Two runs turned out to be enough. Ferree, Peyton Bland and Frady combined to toss a 3-hit shutout.
Coach Fougerousse’s strategy was to let each pitcher pitch through the entire lineup once, then switching.
“I only let them (North Knox) see each pitcher once,” the coach said. “Then I’ll evaluate who we’ll start in the sectional.”
North Knox had runners at first and second in the top of the second. Katie Kixmiller singled and Madison Carpenter walked. But Ferree struck out the side, averting any damage.
The Lady Warriors had two aboard again in the third. With two out Phoebe Worstell beat out an infield hit and Strain drew a free pass. Bland coaxed Kixmiller into a groundout to end the inning.
Linton-Stockton and North Knox will face each other again next Tuesday in the semifinal round of 2A Sectional 47 at South Knox.
