Eastern’s Farrah Young will run with the Grizzlies
Eastern Greene track athlete Farrah Young will have a chance to continue her track career at the next level. The Lady Thunderbird senior recently signed her letter of intent to run for the Franklin College Grizzlies.
And she is grateful for the opportunity. “My dad never got the chance to run in college so I figured I’d run for him.”
Her father is also her coach. David Young is the girls track coach at Eastern Greene.
Franklin College is a private liberal arts and sciences college in Franklin, Indiana, about 20 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.
The Grizzlies compete in NCAA Division III athletics. Franklin is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
It’s a small school, with an enrollment of approximately 1,000 undergraduates.
“I was looking for a smaller school to attend to get my Criminal Justice degree,” Farrah said. “They also sent me some information about running for them.”
Franklin head track and field coach Demetrius Bailey sent her some information about the track program when he found out about her interest in the school.
She said what she likes about the school is, “It’s small. It’s nice and ‘homey.’
“everyone was so nice and welcoming there.”
Young added it’s no more than a five-minute walk to any of her classes. “When it’s cold out you don’t have to walk three miles to get somewhere.”
Young ransprints for the Lady Thunderbirds, primarily the 400 meters. She also ran a leg on Eastern’s 4X800 relay team but doesn’t plan to run the longer distance in college.
“I’m really not sure yet what I’ll run there,” she said. “I won’t really know until I get there. They haven’t really told me much about it.”
She plans to use her Criminal Justice degree to eventually become an Indiana State Trooper.
