UPDATE: Cooling centers needed in Greene County

Thursday, July 18, 2019

With the heat index expected to top 100 degrees, Greene County Emergency Management is asking community churches and organizations to open their doors as a cooling center.

“Greene County churches and other organizations are requested to provide cooling centers during this dangerous heatwave.” Said Roger Axe, Director of Greene County Emergency Management Agency.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued an Excessive Heat Watch, which is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Sunday evening with highs in the mid to upper 90s daily, with the heat index reaching 105 to 110 degrees.

“We have several persons at risk, especially the elderly and young that do not have air conditioning. Prolonged exposure to such excessive heat can be life threating. Accordingly, we are asking our churches and other organizations to provide possible life-saving cooling centers Thursday through Saturday of this week. We ask that organizations willing to provide cooling centers call Greene County Emergency Management Agency at 812-384-4012 and we will notify the media.” Axe said.

• The Bloomfield Community Building will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. only on Thursday, July 17.

• The North Shelter House at the Bloomfield Park will be open as a Cooling Center this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

  • If all else fails... power or air-conditioning... Fill the bathtub with COLD water & get in. Water usually comes out of the tap below 60 degrees.
