WRV boys nip Cards; Lady Lakers dominate county meet

Friday, August 30, 2019

SWITZ CITY -- The White River Valley boys and the Shakamak girls won the Greene County Invitational meets Thursday night at WRV.

WRV finished first with an aggregate time of 93:36, followed by Bloomfield, 93:36; Eastern-Green, 94:29; Shakamak, 100:40; and Linton-Stockton, 114:14. WRV finished ahead of Bloomfield because the Wolverines’ sixth runner, Tuck Kirkoff, finished ahead of Justin Ingram, Bloomfield’s No. 6 runner.

The Lady Lakers dominated the girls race as eight of the top 15 runners were Shakamak girls. They recorded an aggregate time of 114:02, followed by WRV, 129:26; Eastern, 130:05; and Linton, 156.26. Bloomfield did not record a team score as the Lady Cardinals entered only three runners.

The meet represented the third championship for two seniors, Joe Records of WRV and Jacy Collins of Shakamak. Records finished in 17 minutes, five seconds, and Collins in 20:54.

Collins and teammate, Lilly Linneweber who took second with a time of 21:36, started out in front, but Collins took command of the race halfway through the second lap. Collins said she knew if she wanted to win the race in her final year, she had to get a comfortable lead.

“It feels really good,” Records said. “It feels good to come out and run against some great competition. We come out and push each other.”

Damon Kesler led Records for the first lap, but Records took the lead on the second lap. He said the second mile has been his weakest thus far in the season, and he has been working in practice on improving it..

“I came out today and it worked, thanks to my coaches,” Records said. “My teammates helped by pushing me in practice.”

Kesler finished ahead of Records in the Early Bird Invitational last Saturday. He said he has been battling cramps the last couple of days.

“I need to push through the pain. It wasn’t a bad race,” Kesler said. “I’m looking forward to the next race.”

Records and Kesler will get a chance to race against each other again at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Mustang Invitational at Edgewood.

“He’s a really good runner,” Kesler said of Records. “He’s always good competition.”

Dustin Lester of Eastern-Greene placed third with a time of 17:16.

Freshman harrier Adalyn Wiseman placed fourth for Bloomfield, finishing 34 seconds behind teammate Hannah Walls who came in third with a time of 22:19. Wiseman said she tried to stay near Walls, one of her goals for the season.

“I was really happy,” Wiseman said. “I wasn’t expecting it. It was pretty hard for my first time, but I thought I ran pretty good for the first time.”

Shakamak’s brilliant performance bodes well for the rest of the season, Collins said. She added she was “super-, super-proud of my teammates.

“I think we’re going to go far this year as long as we keep our minds on it and get our mileage in,” she said. “I think you’ll see big things from us.”

She said she has been running five miles a day and tries to put in a six-mile day once a week. She said Linneweber has been pushing her and teaching her a great deal.

“You’ll see a lot of good things from her, too,” Collins predicted.

Jonathan Hayden of Linton placed fourth in 18:02.
