Monday, February 17, 2020

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to residents Monday morning about a scammer who is calling residents and identifying himself as a member of the department.

According to a press release, GCSD has received several calls from the public stating they received calls from a male identifying himself as Lt. Wade with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

“The male has stated the persons have a warrant and need to turn themselves in. Also, he has been telling people they need to go to the sheriff’s department for a DNA sample,” the press release states.

The telephone ID shows the number as 812-227-5245, but GCSD warns the call could be from other numbers as well.

“The scammer is using multiple numbers and these numbers are not able to be traced,” according to the press release.

GCSD reminds residents that the sheriff’s department does not call to inform someone they have a warrant. “If you receive any calls of this nature and you feel uncomfortable, you may verify by calling this department at 812-384-4411 option 1.”
