Saint Mary-of-the-Woods college will be offering another program to the mix this year. Beginning in the fall, SMWC will offer Emergency Medical Technician certification courses. As emergency responders responsible for stabilizing and transporting patients, EMTs play a critical role in the healthcare field. The EMT certification course consists of a total of 159 non-credit course hours. The coursework is comprised of 138 classroom hours which adhere to core National Education Standards, 16 hours of training in the field, and five hours of additional required coursework as mandated by the state. After the classes are complete, EMT students can take the National Registry Certification written exam to gain certification. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods has a rich history. According to their website, the founders of the college were Sisters of Providence who left their convent in Ruille-sur-Loir, France in search of a place to start an educational women’s academy. The women spent over a month on the ocean before landing in New York. The Sisters, speaking very little English, journeyed across the United States until they settled at what is now known as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. The Academy, as it was then known, began offering classes in 1841, 29 years before Independence Day was declared a federal holiday. As such, SMWC is the oldest Catholic college in Indiana.
