Lakers rally past Barr-Reeve in State tourney rematch
In a rematch from last year's Semi-State championship, the A No. 3 Shakamak baseball team defeated A No. 1 Barr-Reeve 4-3 in eight innings.
The Lakers are 15-7, winners of their last five, with two games remaining in the regular season.
In the top of the second, Shakamak sophomore Ian Samm hit a home run to center field to take an early lead.
Barr-Reeve responded with a home run in the bottom for the second as the teams were tied until the bottom of the fourth.
A single and a sacrifice fly put the Vikings up 3-1 as the Lakers went three up, three down in the top of the fifth.
Barr-Reeve had runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth with one out before the Lakers earned two outs to keep the game 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, Samm started off with a single before sophomore Dolton Fiscus singled to put two runners on.
Freshman Madden Husband then doubled, scoring Samm to draw within 3-2 with one out.
Junior Owen Cox then singled, scoring Husband to tie the game at 3.
After a single in the bottom of the seventh, junior Linden Jenkins and the Shakamak defense forced Barr-Reeve to go down in order to move into extras.
With two outs, Jenkins hit a double to put a runner in scoring position.
Samm was then intentionally walked before Fiscus singled to load the bases with two outs.
Husband singled, scoring Jenkins to take a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore Carter Crosby earned a strikeout for the first out before a line out and a ground out ended the game for a 4-3 Laker victory.
Husband earned two hits and two RBIs, with Samm adding two hits and one RBI with the home run.
Fiscus added two hits, with Owen Cox adding one hit and one RBI.
Jenkins added a hit to round out the team.
Jenkins pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits, with four strikeouts.
Crosby earned the save, giving up no hits and no runs with one strikeout.
Up next for the Lakers is a home game against South Knox on Thursday, May 16 before traveling to West Vigo on Monday.
The Lakers start the postseason against White River Valley on Wednesday, May 22.
The 1A Sectional 57 will be hosted at Shakamak.
