Linton-Stockton freshman Micaela Hazelwood earned the No. 8 spot in the Greene County Daily World's top sports stories for 2011 thanks to her efforts in the shot put and discus.

The freshman earned a place in both events at the IHSAA State Finals in Bloomington.

While she didn't win she did represent the Lady Miners and herself very well finishing 11th in the discus and 23rd in the shot put.

Hazlewood's best effort in the discus was 124 feet, 10 inches, which came on her second attempt. That was a personal best.

She also had throws of 122-7 and 116-5.

The top nine girls in each event earn a medal and All-State honors. She was almost five feet short of the ninth-place finisher -- Liesl Davenport of Huntington North.

But she just missed qualifying for the finals by two inches.

"I thought I did very well," said Hazlewood. "I was sure I would get those two inches and get in the finals, but things happen I guess.

"I did really well this season. I got better as the season went along. Hopefully I can do that the next three years and do better at state."

In the shot put, Hazlewood was 23rd. Her throws were 35-11, 35-2 and 34-5.

"Today was a big stepping stone for her," said Linton-Stockton track coach Aaron Lynn. "This was a great experience.

"She just started throwing the discus in the eighth grade. She has come a long way in two years. She is going to mature and get stronger and her future is very bright. Hopefully she can come back here a couple more times over the next three seasons."
