No 3 - Eastern Greene basketball had interesting year
There were several things that happened to the Eastern Greene High School boys basketball program in 2011, making it the Greene County Daily World's No. 3 sports story of 2011.
On the court, the Thunderbirds claimed its fourth sectional championship in school history -- all in Class 2A.
They also became the first T-Bird team to win a regional game -- a 52-50 victory in overtime against Brownstown Central before losing to Forest Park by five points in the regional title game at Huntingburg Memorial Gymnasium.
The 23-3 record -- losses to Bedford North Lawrence and North Daviess during the regular season -- tied the 2001 team for most wins in a season.
After the season was over, EGHS coach Andy Igel was named to the staff to help guide the Indiana Junior All-Star team in its annual exhibition series against the Indiana All-Stars.
Thunderbird standout JT Yoho also was part of the Junior All-Star team. He was part of a group of six players that made up the Southern Indiana contingent, which joined the six corps players for a game at Washington in June.
Igel traveled with the team to Northern Indiana when they played another exhibition game against Senior Stars in June with six new players.
Over the summer, the school's all-time leading scorer, Levi Carmichael, returned to coach at Eastern Greene.
He was hired as the assistant coach in waiting. He will take over for Igel whenever the Washington Catholic graduate decides to step down.
Yoho had a couple of individual accomplishments -- one before the season began and another after. He announced he was going to play in the Horizon League for Wright State University and signed a letter of intent to play for coach Billy Donlon.
Also, he came into the 2011-12 season needing just 46 points to reach 1,000 for his career. He went over the mark on Dec. 4 at Mitchell, becoming the seventh T-Bird to do so.
