Number of visitors to GCDW website continues to grow; Top 20 viewed web entries of 2011

The number of visitors to the Greene County Daily World's website -- www.gcdailyworld.com -- continued to grow in 2011.

With two days remaining to gather statistics for the year, daily unique visitors and daily pageviews have already reached an all-time high -- more than doubling both categories since 2008.

So far in 2011, the website has registered 14,912,696 pageviews -- an average of 48,745 daily.

Unique visitors number 2,541,525 for 2011 -- an average of 7,909 each day.

When tracking the amount of traffic on a website, unique visitors refers to a person who visits a website more than once within a specified period of time. Software that tracks and counts website traffic can distinguish between visitors who only visit the site once and unique visitors who return to the site.

Unique visitors are measured according to their unique IP addresses, which are like online fingerprints, and unique visitors are counted only once no matter how many times they visit the site.

A site's pageviews are measured by the number of files that are requested from a site.

The 2011 statistics easily top the numbers for the previous three years.

In 2010, 13,049,908 pageviews (42,534 daily average) were registered and 2,374,568 unique visitors (daily average 7,393).

The year 2009 saw 12,468,832 pageviews (40,594 daily average) and 2,098,878 unique visitors (6,547 daily average).

The year 2008, when the statistics were first gathered, the website had 6,909,832 pageviews (32,684 daily average) and 1,105,158 unique visitors (5,057 daily average).
