If it quacks like a duck

To the Editor:

Senate candidate Richard Murdock's comments on abortion (pregnancy caused by rape is something "God intended") is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the tea-party platform.

Moreover, the Republican Party, moving to the center to try to conger votes in the late stages of the election should be insulting to every American and every Hoosier.

Mitt Romney to Mike Pence, Richard Mourdock to Larry Bucshon, and even state candidates, like Bruce Borders and Matt Ubelhor stand for most of the extremist Republican agenda.

Every woman should be taken aback by the dispassionate concern about their health, emotions, and personal needs at a time when "yes or no" can't begin to deal with the tribulations they may be facing. And how about Matt Ubelhor and Bruce Borders voting to cut off all Medicaid funding (even non-abortion funding) to Planned Parenthood (recently held to be unconstitutional by the 7th Circuit Court of appeals), one of the most accessible resources for women (especially poorer women) to receive pre and post natal care.

The Charter School Amendment (HB1002) that both Matt Ubelhor and Bruce Borders voted for, something I previously suggested was nothing more than affluent families hitting up the tax-payers to pay for their kid's private school tuitions, a position further supported at http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/defining-your-ideal/59-private-vs-publ... where it states; "Because private schools define the identity of their communities, they often pick and choose between candidates based not only on their scholastic achievement but also their ethnicity and religious background -- as well as the special attributes (or assets) of their parents." and at http://www.edweek.org/ew/issues/private-schooling/ that states "Parents of private school students are also more likely to be white, Catholic, and Republican" with an annual income of $75,000. Each time a student's tuition is paid to a private school, money is taken from our "non-discriminating" public schools.

As the president said in the last debate, it's time to come home and begin the process of nation-building. It's time to start thinking about really taking our country and our states back to the days when we made stuff that everybody wanted and could only get through our technological superiority and our factories.

Thank you for our 'big surprise'

To the Editor:

Thank you, thank you to everyone who came out for the "big surprise" on our 60th wedding anniversary. There were so many people and we were totally in shock.

A big "thank you" to our children Linda and Rodney Bingham and Marge and David Edwards, all the grandchildren, great grandchildren, our sisters and brother, friends and neighbors, just everyone who came out to wish us "congratulations" and all the cards.

Linton Rotary appreciates support

To the Editor:

The Linton Rotary Club appreciated the community support at their pancake and sausage fundraiser.

In particular, the club would like to thank the Linton Fire Department, Baesler's Grocery, Jerry and Gayle Margraf and the Rotarians that volunteered their time to make the event successful.

Money raised from the breakfast goes to support the funding of scholarships for local high school students.
