Thanks to all who made it a great year in sports
With another school year behind us and the conclusion of another spring sports season I'd like to take a moment to thank all our area teams and athletes who made this such a memorable year.
Just in the last calendar year I've enjoyed the privilege of covering IHSAA State Championships in four sports - baseball, football, basketball and golf. And I didn't even attend the cross country and track state meets.
And I've barely scratched the surface. I haven't even mentioned all the sectionals, regionals and semistates.
I love the postseason. I love everything about it - the buildup and excitement leading up to the event, the tournament atmosphere on game day, and the sheer thrill of competition.
The postseason is, in the words of Andy Williams, "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year."
Words can't describe the thrill of being on the grass at Victory Field, the field turf at Lucas Oil Stadium, courtside at Bankers Life Fieldhouse or walking the fairways at Prairie View. It makes me feel like a "real professional" even though I probably have no business being there. And it makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
And it's all because of you - our athletes and coaches.
None of this would be possible without your extraordinary accomplishments on the field of play.
You make our jobs easier. And you make our jobs a lot more interesting and fun than they would be anywhere else.
And when a local team makes a deep postseason run, it gives us a chance to offer our readers stories and insights we otherwise don't have the time and space for.
We are sitting on a veritable sports goldmine. I can't think of a better place to follow high school sports than right here in Greene County, Indiana.
We may never experience another year quite like this one. I hope we do.
Then again we might have a banner year with state champs in several sports.
Wouldn't it be great to have two teams from Greene County playing the same day at Victory Field and Bankers Life in the 1A and 2A State Finals?
I hope to see even more of you under the brightest lights on the biggest stages.
To all who made it an amazing year in sports - Thank You!
