COWABUNGA, It’s Polar Plunge time!
Next weekend, I plan to meet up with my teammates in the Greene County Popsicles to drive up to the ISU campus in Terre Haute and join a couple of hundred other compassionate, crazy people as we wait our turn to dive into a pool filled with water at whatever the outside temperature may be. We will probably be filmed by local television stations, who seem very fond of waiting until we attempt to climb out of the pool in our waterlogged costumes, grimacing with the shock of the cold dunking we have endured to ask us questions on-camera. Good times.
No, really though. GOOD times!
This will be my third year raising money for Greene County Special Olympics through Polar Plunge, and I can’t wait. It’s an exciting day, waiting in line in our costumes, checking out the creative costumes of other teams.
This year, a big part of our team will be people associated with the Greene County Humane Society. Summer Perry, GCHS employee, contacted me last Christmas about ways she could help the community. It just so happened I was heading out to cover the Special Olympics Christmas party at Switz City Christian Church that evening and I invited her along to meet Greene County Special Olympics most fervent supporter, Linda Bedwell.
“Be careful,” I warned Summer, “Linda WILL try to talk you into joining the team for Polar Plunge.”
“Oh, cool,” she replied. “I’d love to be a part of that.” She was ready and willing to help and even talked to her roommate, who works with the very people we raise money for, and our team grew by one more.
Between the four of us, we have raised over $2,300 so far for our Greene County Special Olympics athletes. By the day of the Plunge, knowing Linda Bedwell, we will have plenty more raised.
As a costume theme, we will be dressing as shelter animals with tails, floppy ears and personalized pet tags for the event.
It’s not too late to make a donation, anything will help us as we lose our freakin’ minds and jump into the icy water one by one.
If you would like to donate to this very, very worthy cause, please visit my Plunge Page at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/patti-danner/Polar-Plunge-2019-Terre-Haute. Even a dollar helps to give our special athletes the pride in themselves that they deserve. If you can, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you can’t, I still love ya.
