Parade aftermath
My second time watching the Linton Freedom Festival Parade has come and gone as I enjoyed it more the second time around.
Last year, I did not know what to expect and I did a little better in year two.
Sunday, it was exciting seeing lawn chairs cover Main Street as the anticipation builds. I was not expecting a porta-potty to show up outside my house though. I guess it makes sense to have porta-potties and trash cans on hand but I think I missed those details last year.
Parades are fueled on candy. I know of a parade in Indy that ended because they stopped giving out candy on the route. Maybe it was for safety but once the candy stopped flowing, people with kids stopped coming. Even Linton’s tradition of its parade needs candy. I am glad the Linton Freedom Festival Parade saw plenty of candy being given out.
The flyover of the A-10 jets was the coolest park of the parade. The sound they made and their speed was exciting. The only downside though would be the suddenness of when they showed up. One minute, you are looking at the parade and before you know it, military planes are over your head. I know the timing could not have been helped but it was strange.
As for the parade itself, the things I notice both years is how sudden the parade ends. It ends without warning. At the Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, everything builds up for Santa Claus. Linton’s parade just ends. Maybe a float could reserve the final spot.
The idea I think that will help the parade would be school floats or school reunions. If people are coming back to Linton for the fourth like I have been told, then the parade is a perfect time to hold class reunions and have them walk the route. That would be better than another Jeep, another golf cart or another congressional candidate.
Personally, my plan to livestream the parade hit a snag with my internet. My Wi-Fi just could not get through the walls of my home very well. In year two, I have improved though in my ability to grill burgers right after the parade. So that was a plus.
Welp, I guess it’s on to next year.
