Game of the Weak
Sunday saw the NFL season come to an end for the Indianapolis Colts. When a season ends with relief you know the year was bad.
The Colts had one final game against the Houston Texans at home and many were dreading it. Two teams in the bottom five of the league with nothing to play for. However, that’s my type of game.
I knew someone in the area who was trying to get rid of his tickets to the game and gladly took them. When you have two bad teams the game is going to be memorable in some form or fashion. This was no exception. Both teams had a quarterback who will never lead a team to a winning season and delivered with multiple interceptions.
On a third down in the second half, I turned to my wife and said, “He’s going to throw an interception on this play” when referring to Davis Mills of the Texans. Mills threw a pick-six and my wife was stunned. Later in the game I predicted another interception. When you get a below average quarterback on third and long it is a good bet disaster is near.
When bad teams play it leads to comedy. Take Coach Jeff Saturday of the Colts for example. He brought out the field goal team on fourth down in the third quarter. Houston jumped offsides to make it just fourth and three. Saturday had the kicker on the field at first but changed his mind once the fans booed the decision to kick the field goal. Saturday ran down the sideline to call a time out as the fans cheered. Sadly, the Colts failed on fourth down. Had the Colts kicked the field goal they would have won the game. Had they kept their time-out it might have helped in the fourth quarter.
The Colts lost to the Texans 32-31. Houston converted on fourth and long twice on the final drive and went for two to win the game. It was the first time all season a team converted on fourth and long twice in a game. It was the perfect ending to a miserable season.
It was also pure comedy.
