Making shapes from colors
A bit nicer of a title than the hooker one, right? Anywho, I decided to do another crochet blog because I A.) couldn’t come up with anything else and B.) just wanted to talk about crocheting again, OK? Cool.
I’ve made some things in my day, a fluffy egg collecting apron, a herd of lions for classmates, baby blankets and more.
It’s so fascinating how something as simple as colored string, be it acrylic, wool, cotton or otherwise can turn into something much more complex.
An intricate doily, a sting ray, a baby-sized deerstalker hat, endless wash cloths and scrubbies.
Some I go into with a purpose, a recipient in mind, and others I make just because. Take the sting ray for example: I saw a video awhile back and sent it to a friend. It was too cute to not try. Seriously, it’s adorable. Plus, we both agreed an army of colorful rays was just shy of necessary.
While the first didn’t turn out as great as I’d hoped, it was still neat to see the final product.
I used to only like quick projects, ones where I could see the progress and get to the final result faster so I could feel that sense of accomplishment. Now, it’s more about how it will come out and taking the time to make sure there are as few mistakes as possible.
I did just complete one of the most complex creations I’ve ever attempted, and honestly they came out pretty good. I can’t say what they are because it’s a surprise and I won’t have given them to their new owners until after this comes out, but just know that they’re super neat.
I think one of the best parts about making stuff like I, and so many others, do is how something so small or simple can bring so much joy.
That something made of fibers and a hook and worked into a menagerie of shapes can bring smiles and laughter seems such a unique power, and I am forever grateful that I have it.
