Four Greene Countians to attend Camp Riley
Four Greene County children with physical disabilities will have a good summer thanks to Camp Riley for Youth with Physical Disabilities.
Three siblings from Solsberry -- Ariel Jordan, 13, John Jordan, 16, and Makayla Jordan, 10 -- and Lily English, 16, of Bloomfield will take part in the camp in July.
Their physical disabilities won't keep them from scaling a 40-foot wall, climbing the steep "Cardiac Hill" or taking on other summer camp challenges this year.
Many traditional summer camps cannot accommodate children with physical disabilities. Since 1955, Camp Riley has helped empower more than 12,000 Hoosier children with physical disabilities gain the self-confidence and skills necessary to live their lives to the fullest.
Riley Hospital for Children staff ensures all medical needs are met so campers are able to horseback ride, participate in organized sports and experience other traditional camp activities.
Established by Indiana University and Riley Children's Foundation, Camp Riley is held each summer at Bradford Woods near Martinsville in Morgan County. The facility is universally accessible and specially trained counselors -- never more than three campers per counselor -- help kids do things they have only imagined.
Riley Children's Foundation depends on contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations throughout Indiana, in addition to fees paid by campers' families, to make this experience possible.
Eligible children ages 8 to 18 can attend one of six Camp Riley sessions each summer. This year, approximately 220 campers will come from all over Indiana and five additional states. To join the mailing list for next summer's camp or to find out how your organization, employer or family can send a child with physical disabilities to camp, visit RileyKids.org or call (317) 634-4474 or 1-877-867-4539.
Riley Children's Foundation supports Riley Hospital for Children, Camp Riley for Youth with Physical Disabilities and the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home. As Indiana's only comprehensive hospital dedicated exclusively to the care of children, Riley Hospital has provided compassionate care, support and comfort to children and their families since 1924. Every year children from all 92 Indiana counties turn to Riley Hospital and its regional clinics throughout the state more than 250,000 times. Riley Hospital's partnership with Clarian Health and strong affiliation with the Indiana University School of Medicine make it the leader in pediatric care in the state and the region. RileyKids.org.
