Bloomfield-Eastern Greene Public Library has new director (Local News ~ 07/12/07)
By Timberly Ferree staff writer A new face will soon replace Bloomfield Library Director Carolyn Konnert-- who after spending the last 20 years in the position will retire on Aug. 31. Her replacement is John Helling, a former Crawfordsville resident, who will begin his new job on Aug. 1. Helling is currently employed at the Aguilar Branch of the New York Public Library in East Harlem, but his immediate family still resides in the Hoosier state. During a phone interview on Thursday, Helling explained that his recent trip to the Bloomfield Library for his initial interview was a positive one. "I really liked it (library) a lot. I think it has some great programs. I was really impressed...." he said. But don't look for Helling to make any huge changes as the new library director. "The library is going in a good direction there is no reason to jerk the wheel," he explained-- noting its current success. "I would like to implement broader technology classes...offering instruction in programs such as Word and Excel to give people practical skills in addition to the great stuff already going on," Helling said. Helling has a bachelor's degree in English at Indiana University and a MLS from the School of Library and Information Science. As the newly-hired library director, Helling hopes to soon reside in Bloomfield. With her retirement quickly approaching, Konnert explained that she will miss her job. "I will miss it. I will miss all the people...the community has been wonderful," she said. For the most part, Konnert cherishes the moments spent as the library director. "I've had a wonderful opportunity to see the library develop as they added new territory and built new buildings," she explained. "It's been fun and exciting and sometimes a challenge." But, there are a few things that Konnert won't miss. "I won't miss the budget, money shortages and tax distributions not coming in on time... and some other paper work," she said. Prior to her retirement, Konnert will work with Helling for about a month. "I will show him where everything is and introduce him to the staff ...so he can start making some of his own decisions," Konnert explained. Konnert's decision to retire was partly made after realizing it was time to bring a new energy to the library. "I don't think you can leave something you've been doing for 20 years and not miss it," she explained. "But, I decided that it's time for the library to have some new eyes, a new perspective and some new leadership." Throughout her 20-year career, the local library has undergone many changes, she noted. At one time there were no computers and now they're everywhere. "The 20 years I've spent as a public librarian have been definitely a period of change... and honestly I didn't come into this job with any computer knowledge," Konnert explained. "I've kind of adapted, but the technology keeps changing faster than I can keep up with. I think somebody with new energy and younger skills will be a great opportunity for the library district." -
