The crowd converging into Tiger Stadium on that warm, July evening wasn't there to see a baseball game. Some of the special guests were dressed as though they were attending the opening of a Broadway play. Actually they were attending "a first" as they exited their limos and white Hummers dressed in long, evening gowns and tuxedos...

After asking for story ideas last week, readers called or sent in a nice list of Greene County people, places and things to keep me busy for awhile. From the time the ducks landed on the Linton football field during a game to an impressive car project at Eastern School, readers offered ideas from Jasonville to Owensburg and everything in between...

Academics versus athletics. Which is more important in the public school system? Personally, I favor book smarts over ball playing any day. But with high ISTEP scores being the key to successfully educating the masses how could I not? Sure, sports are fun. Teamwork as well as self-discipline are both positive rewards gained from athletic participation; however math, science and English take one much further...

To the Editor: Last week there was an article by one of your writers that criticized the Greene County Commissioners for deleting from the budget the position of county managers. A county manager would have taken some of the pressure and expenditure of time off the shoulders of the commissioners and may even save the county some money. ...

There is not a day goes by but we read of the failure of the Indiana Department of Education to "do a job," that, in my opinion, does not need to be accomplished. They should leave the schools alone and forget the dumb rating system. They are creating animosity, accusing where it need not being accused, fixing the rating system, changing the rating system; I could go on and on...
