GCSD deputies responded to numerous accidents caused by ice-covered roadways

The Greene County Sheriff's Department was swamped with telephone calls regarding slick roads and slide-offs on Tuesday afternoon when freezing rain hit the area and covered roads and highways with ice. The Greene County Courthouse was closed by early afternoon. Commissioner's president Bart Beard -- after consulting with Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Axe -- decided to allow employees extra time to make the commute home due to the dangerous road conditions. County and state highway department crews were out on the roadways before noon --
