Linton Music Festival draws thousands
(Local News ~ 09/07/10)
In 2010, the Linton Music Festival's audience potentially went global -- and many locals loved what they saw. This weekend's crowd for the sixth annual Fest didn't have to be among the estimated 11,000 listening in Humphreys Park. Some caught the shows, spread across three days and featuring 38 artists, on the first-ever Internet simulcast of the shows. Those who missed the show -- or couldn't take in all three days -- can also replay what they'd like to watch. Often, as many as 100 remote viewers were on-line, registered and adding their comments to the festival's live stream. Others heard the music through cell phones some attendees raised cell phones high, giving loved ones in distant cities a chance to hear the music they found enthralling. Tony Kluesner, who'd played earlier in the day with the White River Valley Jammin' Pans, raised his phone high Saturday afternoon to transmit the sounds of Yearbook Committee to his son in San Diego. "You've got to hear this," he said of the eight-member folk band, each taking a turn on vocals and playing obscure instruments, up to and including a sheet metal solo by Terre Haute's Chad Lone. "I'm just blown away by all the talent," Kluesner said. "I'm always honored to play here. It's just amazing that this little town keeps pulling in all this talent." And later in the day, No More Kings, a recurring festival favorite direct from Los Angeles, put in a stirring set where they namechecked Linton repeatedly by altering their lyrics, most notably during their hit and encore "Sweep the Leg." Frontman Pete Mitchell, surveying one of the largest crowds of the weekend, smiled at being invited back to perform at the Fest. "Thank you so much for coming out," Mitchell told the crowd. "It means a lot to us. It really means so much that we were wanted back." Mitchell praised festival organizer Jared Albright, "the nicest guy I know ... Albright is all right by me." Launching into a cover of Toto's 1982 hit "Africa," Mitchell noted some of the band had performed with Frankie Valli. "Oh, I forgot, everyone here's like 13," he said, laughing. That, however, was hardly the case, as fans too young to form words mingled with music lovers who might've seen Valli during his 1960s heyday. For some, the Music Fest was a reminder of summers past. Danny Phillips, performing as "Big D" in a solo set of acoustic Jackson Browne and Oasis covers, remembered past shows on the bandstand stage. "I have many fond memories of this stage in 1980 ... 1990 ... 2002," he said, laughing. "I'm not that old, yet." For many playing the festival, Linton was also a way station for shows later in the day. Phillips planned a show in Washington, while Ken Tucker's Blues Band was headed to Jasper. "I look forward to this every year," the Sullivan-based bluesman said after ending his set with "Sweet Home Chicago." Since he's performed here each of the show's six years, Tucker's gained perspective on how the festival's grown. "It just seems to get bigger and bigger," he said. "More bands, and really talented bands at that." Local rockers the Little Red Roosters closed down Saturday's show, with lead singer John Danner delivering what he called "The Little Red Rooster's Love Message" amid classic covers of songs by Bob Marley, Little Feat and the Stones. "Thank you, gentlemen, ladies, and bald-headed babies," Danner said, smiling. "Try to eat right, get plenty of sleep, and go for walks if you get the chance. That's about all." Out in the crowd, Spencer's Fred Hoffman, a 1987 graduate of Bloomfield High School, was taking at least some of Danner's advice, along with a dinner break. He was impressed with the music, but a bit taken aback at the food prices. "The bands I saw were pretty good," he said. "I liked Philpot and No More Kings, definitely better than other bands I've seen." The man serving up Hoffman's sandwich, Larry Jackson of Indianapolis, enjoyed the music as well. "They've had some pretty good rock bands. They started out the day with some of the slower bands, but things have kind of picked up," he said, dancing and smiling. The festival, funded through local sponsorships and donations, drew strong support as crews passed through the crowd with green boxes, audience members tossing bills and change in to ensure the show must go on. Little Berkeley Flater, 3, paraded in circles, dancing and laughing to the music and awaiting her next turn at the bounce house as her aunt Jill Flater watched. Glow sticks, swords and necklaces lit the crowd, some of them discarded in the bushes, lending the nights a strange, near-magical quality, as what many consider summer's final weekend wound down. After many weeks of temperatures in the 90s, the cool of September kicked in, keeping the thermometer around 65 degrees for much of the weekend. Sunday's shows, highlighted by nine hours of music included local closer Awesome Possum and regional acts like ex-REO Speedwagon guitarist and "Bob and Tom Show" mainstay Duke Tumatoe and his Power Trio. And, Albright said, the best is still to come. "Next year, we're going to take it to the next level," he said.
