UPDATED: Harp named to county council
(Local News ~ 01/20/11)
Six Democrat Party precinct committeemen met Thursday night in Jasonville and selected former Worthington Town Councilman Hal Harp as the new Greene County District 3 Council member. Harp received three of the six votes, according to County Democrat Party Chairman Jeff Lehman. He did not announce the tally for the other three candidates: J.P. Meurer, Monte Harp, and Nancy Snellenberger, but said Harp received "the majority." Harp will fill the remaining four-year term of Brent Murray, who resigned Jan. 3 after he was appointed full-time county highway superintendent. Murray's term started Jan. 1. Lehman said he was pleased with the selection. "I think he's ready to go and get involved. We wish him well," the party chairman said after the brief party caucus at the Jasonville Municipal Building. Harp brings experience in the operation of town government and budgeting to his new role with the county council. The new councilman is the current president of the Greene County Redevelopment Commission and he finished an 11-year stint on the Worthington Council on Dec. 31. He also served on Greene County Solid Waste Management Board until departing the Worthington council. Harp said he was pleased in the vote of confidence from the party leaders. "I am very excited about being selected. I hope I can represent our district with the county council with using good judgment and I'll listen to what everyone has to say and be able to compromise and get decisions made," the told the Greene County Daily World after his selection. The NSWC Crane retiree says his serving on three other boards or councils has given him an insight into how things work. "I'm sure that I will be able to work with everyone and hopefully contribute something to the county council," he added. Harp retired from Crane in 1997 after serving a total of 37 years, including a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. At NSWC Crane, he worked as an electronics technician and computer specialist. A native of Lexington, Ky., Harp has lived in the Worthington area since 1963. District 3 covers Stockton 2 precinct, all of Wright and Smith townships as well as Jefferson 1 and 2 precincts. There are a total of nine precincts in the district, but three of the committee slots are vacant in Wright Township (Precincts 1, 4 and 5). The six precinct committeemen who made the selection included: Stockton 2 -- Shelby Meurer; Smith -- Linda Bingham; Jefferson 1-- Gloria Klass; Jefferson 2 -- Lena Johnson; Wright 2 -- Peggy Sluder, and Wright 3 -- Roy Terrell, Sr.
