Tire and e-scrap amnesty events turn out well for Recycling Center
(Local News ~ 05/18/11)
By Sabrina Westfall Staff Writer SWITZ CITY -- The Greene County Recycling Center recently had a tire and e-scrap amnesty that allowed people to turn in items to be recycled free of charge. "The event was a success, as you can see," Greene County Solid Waste Management District Supervisor Erek Wilson said, as he pointed to a large pile of tires. The tire amnesty took place during the week of April 25-30, and the recycling center collected over 1,000 tires, according to Wilson. There is usually a fee for turning in such large items, but due to a grant from the Indiana Department of Health's West Nile Disease Awareness program, the center had the opportunity to take the items free of charge. The program gives this grant because the water that is sitting in the tire can often become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. West Nile can be spread from an infected mosquito to a human if they are bitten. Also, on May 14 the Recycling Center conducted an e-scrap amnesty. The community turned in large electronic devices, which are no longer allowed to be dumped in the landfills. There are chemicals in the electronics that are too dangerous to be left in a landfill, but Wilson pointed out that there are glass, metal and plastics that can be recycled on the items. "In five hours, we collected more than 25,000 pounds of electronic waste," Wilson explained. At the end of the day, this was enough material to fill a 53 foot semi trailer. He said it is very important to partake in these events in order to eliminate as much waste as possible at once. Some of the scrap that was taken at the recycling center included televisions, computers, electric weedeaters, vacuums, and stereos. About 80 percent of the scrap consisted of televisions and computers, according to Wilson. "I think the strangest thing that was turned in was incubators, for humans," said Wilson. The e-scrap event is made possible by the Creative Recycling Systems (CRS), a company based in Louisville. According to its information packet, it has more than 16 years of experience dealing with the recycling of electronic devices. The Greene County Recycling Center is in the planning stages of conducting similar events in the near future. The group will be set up behind Humphrey's Park this weekend, near the end of the yard sale day behind the tennis courts. Any extra items that are left over following the yard sale can be dropped off to be recycled. These items can also be dropped off at the recycling center at anytime. Wilson also added a reminder that the recycling center is still a drop-off point for the local food pantries. If you have any questions about events, or recycling in general, you can call 659-3788.
