Linton Community Food Pantry changes to summer hours due to heat
(Local News ~ 07/26/11)
Sweltering summer temperatures have forced a temporary change to the operating hours of the Linton Community Food Pantry until Labor Day. Now, the multifaith effort's volunteers will operate the pantry, where families in need can receive donated groceries, from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The pantry will also be open 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. "These are just temporary hours, until the extreme heat passes," said the Rev. Michael Roth, pastor of Saron United Church of Christ. "We want to be sure people understand that." Because the 440 E St. NE facility's cooled only by fans, for the sake of volunteers, afternoon hours will be temporarily abandoned until the weather's cooler. "Here's what has happened," Roth said. "It would be extremely costly to air-condition the pantry, and because it was so hot last week, we made the decision to go to summer hours." The change came about because volunteers needed better conditions to work in as temperatures topped 100, heat complicated further by humidity. "This change will not be a permanent thing," Roth said, adding the pantry's board of directors will consider operating hours again during their quarterly session in August. The pantry is housed just north of St. Peter's Catholic Church. In addition to the Saron Church and St. Peter's, six other churches contribute to the effort: The Linton Assembly of God, Linton Church of Christ, Linton First Christian Church, Linton First United Methodist Church, New Covenant Ministries, and Trinity Lutheran Church. Even if an air-conditioner were donated, Roth said the electric bills, coupled with the fact so many enter and exit the facility, would make cooling the pantry expensive and ineffective. "The doors are never closed, ever, and it would just cost us a fortune. The only way to really address it is to just go to some morning hours." he said. "It's just cost prohibitive. ... It would probably cost more to cool this place down than it would a whole house." Roth added in winter, heat's not a problem because the facility utilizes a gas heater. While the pantry had initially intended to begin summer hours Tuesday, the facility instead stayed open until 4 p.m. after Roth and his volunteers saw a substantial number of patrons. "Originally, we had officially voted on staying open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. without even trying it first, but we really found our busy time was not at 9 a.m. It was 10:30 a.m., a half hour before we closed. That was when the influx tended to happen," Roth said. On Tuesday, 146 individuals -- 38 families in total -- received donations from the pantry. Beneficiaries of the pantry are limited to those who have a Linton zip code. The heavy traffic meant that shelves which were stocked in early morning were nearly empty by the 4 p.m. close. "All the refrigerators were filled to the gills," said volunteer Ellen Buskirk. "And we went after more. Now they're half empty." In total, the pantry has three refrigerators and two freezers, all of which saw substantial decreases in their supplies during Tuesday's operation. "We always take donations, and with people's summer gardens, they're always bringing in fresh vegetables," Roth said. "Basically, we could set up our own farmer's market, with people bringing in corn, zucchini, squash, and all that." While the pantry received a windfall of donations from its annual float in the Freedom Festival parade, those supplies lasted just over two weeks. "These shelves were jammed and packed this morning," Roth said. "Now they're almost empty again. That's always how it goes."
