UPDATED: Crane unit does follow-up bomb search at Linton-Stockton
(Local News ~ 11/09/11)
NSWC Crane officials brought in two K-9 units to Linton-Stockton Junior High and High School on Wednesday to do one more sweep of the campus following Monday's bomb threat. "When they were here on Monday, they offered to come back and do a follow-up search," Linton-Stockton Superintendent Nick Karazsia noted. Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell and Karazsia both stressed there was not another threat, and the police and school officials just wanted to ensure student safety. "Basically, what we are doing is just kind of a safety check today just to be extra cautious," Jerrell explained. "We found nothing." Karazsia said following the search there were no devices found and said the school is safe. Jerrell said Crane was extremely helpful in the second check of the LSHS campus by lending two of its best officers and K-9s. "Both buildings (junior high and high school) were searched and checked with two K-9s," Jerrell said. "We have no reason to believe there is anything on campus." Karazsia said students were kept in their classes during the follow-up search, and a normal class schedule resumed at around 10:15 a.m. "We are going to get students back to a normal class schedule -- at 10:15 -- but we are going to be on heightened security," Karazsia noted. "That basically means the students will switch classes and go to different classes, but we are going to cut down traffic during classes." Karazsia wanted to thank the cooperative efforts of the two Crane units, as well as the help from Jerrell and the LPD. He said students, staff, teachers and administrators have been very cooperative throughout the ordeal. LPD is continuing the investigation in hopes of finding the culprit. "Crimestoppers will be offering a substantial award for information leading to arrest and conviction," Jerrell said, noting his officers are following leads. "My officers have been interviewing people on a back-to-back schedule." Karazsia said Wednesday afternoon there had been no new developments throughout the day. He understands parent concern, but student safety is first priority for the school. "Our No. 1 concern is our student's safety. We are going to do what we can and donate 100 percent of our time to ensure that," Karazsia explained. The superintendent said he sent out a school-wide call by around 10:30 a.m., approximately 15 minutes after the search concluded and normal classes resumed. He would like to stress to parents that administration and staff were deeply involved in the investigation, and taking time to send out a call pulls him away from the search of the school. "We are actively involved in what is going on here. We are prioritizing," he added. "I truly feel the decisions we are making are in the best interest of our students." Karazsia said parents need to be able to trust that the school is taking all necessary precautions to keep their children safe. "They (parents) are more than welcome to call me. Everyone that has called me and left a message, I have gotten back to," Karazsia explained.
