Updated: Several injured in wreck in eastern Greene County
(Local News ~ 12/21/11)
Six people were injured, including four small children, in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on State Road 54 in eastern Greene County. The 7:25 p.m. wreck occurred west of the intersection with County Road 625E. A 2005 Dodge van, driven by Crystal Jefferson, 28, of Bloomington, was eastbound on State Road 54 and rounded a sweeping curve and went left of center into the westbound lane. The van struck a 2006 Ford sedan, driven by 53-year-old Pamela J. Todd of rural Bloomfield, in the middle of the westbound lane, according to a report filed by Indiana State Trooper Eric Russell. Trooper Russell noted that witnesses driving behind the van said Jefferson was "driving erratically." "Statements from Jefferson indicated driver distraction most likely caused her to leave her lane into the westbound lane and into Todd's path of travel," Trooper Russell stated. The most seriously injured was 5-year-old Eliza Kiteka, of Bloomington -- a passenger in Jefferson's van. He suffered serious trauma, cardiac arrest and internal injuries and was initially taken Greene County General. The child was later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital and his condition is unknown. Jefferson sustained internal injuries and a shoulder injury and was taken to Greene County General Hospital in Linton. Arianna Jefferson, 7, of Bloomington was also taken to Greene County General Hospital with a possible hip fracture and facial injury and then transferred to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. She is listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. Ishmael Kiteka, 2, of Bloomington, was also taken to Greene County General Hospital for treatment of seatbelt marks to the throat. In addition, 4-year-old Wallace Kiteka sustained unknown injuries, and was taken to Greene County General Hospital, according to the police report. Todd suffered a broken arm and other injuries to the lower part of her body. She was transported to Bloomington Hospital. Both vehicles were termed a total loss. Trooper Russell stated that charges could be filed pending further investigation.
