UPDATED: Dowell wins mental attitude award
(High School Sports ~ 06/16/12)
INDIANAPOLIS -- Shakamak senior outfielder/pitcher Brock Dowell was named the recipient of the 2012 L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award following the IHSAA Class A state championship game at Victory Field on Saturday afternoon. It came on the heels of a disappointing 12-2 loss to Lafayette Central Catholic in the finals. Dowell is the third player from Shakamak to claim the prestigious award. The first was current Shakamak first-base coach Steven McNabb, who claimed the honor in 2007. He was followed by Joshua Horton in 2008. "I don't really know what to say, it's awesome," Dowell said. "It would have been really nice if the team could have came out with the win. But it wasn't meant to be -- I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys and coaches to play my last game with." Dowell said the award was special and will always be a fond memory of his senior year at Shakamak. "It's nice," he said. "I was kind of shocked to hear it. I wasn't really expecting to win it -- but it's still kind of about the team right now." His parents, Matt and Jessica Dowell of Vicksburg, accepted the award on the field along with their son. And both indicated it was a well-deserved honor that took many years of hard work and dedication to finally achieve. "Brock's worked so hard through all the years," Matt said. "Since little league he's just one of those kids that have persevered. After practice he would go out to the batting cage for an hour at a time -- just a great a kid, one you'd want to be your teammate and I'm proud to be his father." Dowell plans on attending Olney Central College in the fall.
