Friday, September 9 The Catholic War Veterans of the USA, Inc. will hold a fundraising spaghetti dinner and quilted comforter raffle from 5-8 p.m. at St Johns Church at 408 Church St. in Loogootee. Council makes cuts, approves employee raises

After three days of cutting costs when possible, the Greene County Council was able to meet its goal and give county employees raises. Before the budget hearings started on Tuesday, the council’s financial consultant, Ben Roeger, informed the council its anticipated revenue for 2017 is $10.4 million, but $1.1 million of that is dedicated to building related debt. Shakamak holds hearing on 2017 budget

Shakamak Schools estimated it would receive $5.4 million in a grant for the school’s general fund this year. According to superintendent Mike Mogan, the amount received is based off of enrollment numbers. “That number is based off of an estimated daily membership of 835,” Mogan said. “Our current enrollment is 817, so that will drop our basic grant to a little over $5.3 million. Our Opinion: Greene County Relay for Life event nixed, but fundraising still necessity

We were sad to learn there will not be a centralized Relay for Life event in Greene County next year. Instead, the local coordinators have made the decision to make the switch to the “Relay Your Way” movement. This isn’t a new concept. Each year, Relay for Life teams would spend the year raising funds, which would then be calculated -- with a little extra fundraising on site -- and then donated to the American Cancer Society to help the fight against cancer...
