Make a decision on facts, not a pretty smile

To the Editor:

This past week I opened an area newspaper and was present with two photos of candidates of two political parties, one currently holding office and one that will no doubt be a contender next year against the current officeholder.

Without going any further, let me state the two people are Greg Goode and Con. Brad Ellsworth of the 8th District. Goode is from Terre Haute and Ellsworth is from Evansville. The jest of the article was how a winning smile may sway votes, but should not determine how we vote.

I have met Ellsworth several times and found him to be very personable and yes, quite easy on the eyes, or a "hunk" as he might be called. But, that said, he has proven to be a welcome sight in and around the 8th District and continues to keep in contact almost weekly.

I, being a citizen of Linton and worked in the city office for 15 years, welcome someone who shows his concern in person. In the 15 years I have only seen ex-Congressman Mr. Hostettler once! And that happened to be at the buffet in Bedford when he first took office. It was a chance meeting, I had to sit across from him at a table and not once did he talk to anyone who passed him. Yes, I know that a person, when eating, should be left alone and he was.

I never saw him in our office to visit or talk to the citizens, be Democrat or Republican.

Our office has been very fortunate to have representation from Sen. Lugar's aside, Mr. Larry Ordner of Evansville. He has been very beneficial in helping us with several important matters, not thinking politically but for the welfare of the constituent.

Now when it comes to voting, everyone has a choice who they want and why. As it should be! But hopefully we don't vote on looks alone. This country faces a lot of major campaign issues and we need the best representation, in Washington and the 8th District. Don't think for a minute that either gentlemen will get elected on looks alone. Listen to what they have to say. It will affect all of us in the 8th District.
