Friday, September 29, 2006

The Shakamak boys and girls cross country teams both claimed first place at the annual Shakamak Invitational Thursday. The varsity competition was scheduled for Saturday, but was called because of thunderstorms.

The Laker boys squad had its top five runners among the first 14 finishers as they had a winning total of 28 points. Linton-Stockton was second with 59 points, South Knox had 68, Eastern Greene scored 82 points, North Knox was fifth with 120 and White River Valley did not have enough runners to compile a team score.

Shakamak's Austin Witt dominated the competition, winning with a time of 16 minutes and six seconds. Laker freshman Drew Gambill was second with a time of 17:35.

Josh Horton was sixth, Jacob Stevenson ran ninth and Matt Rehmel sealed the Shakamak win with a 14th-place finish.

In the girls competition, Lady Laker freshman Casey Fougerousse was the winner, covering the 2.5-mile course in 15:51.

Samantha Crosby and Brandi Ashcraft were 6-7, Dennise Smith ran 10th and Abby Sweet placed 15th as Shakamak had a winning total of 39 points.

"The girls continue to run well," said Shakamak girls coach Kelley Miller. "With the race being postponed, the girls knew we had a chance to win two big meets in one week."

Linton-Stockton's Jenny Poe placed second and teammate Whitley Fusco was clocked at 17:15, good for fourth place as the Lady Miners were second with 49 points.

South Knox was third with 62 points and Eastern Greene's girls were fourth with 66 points. WRV and Sullivan had incomplete teams.

Kayla Erwin and Emily Taylor finished 8-9 for Eastern Greene.

Bridgette Wedel was the top WRV finisher, placing 18th.

In the boys competition, Linton-Stockton's Logan Tharp placed fourth. Jayton Powell was 10th for the Miners.

Tony Dyer of White River Valley was fifth. Wolverine Artem McHenry was clocked at 18:53, good for eight place.

Tyler Ogden and Jon Marmouze were the top Eastern Greene finishers, placing 11-12.

Eastern Greene, Linton-Stockton and Shakamak runners will compete at WRV Monday at the freshmen Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference meet. The varsity boys and girls SWIAC races will be Thursday, also at White River Valley.
