Linton man remembers former scout leaders

Friday, October 5, 2007

To the Editor:

Along with Warren Onken's passing last week, it made me reflect on both these past Linton Scout Masters and what was probably the "heyday" of scouting in Linton.

In the 1960s under Mr. Onken and the 1970s with Mr. Lindsey, Linton had a huge Boy Scout troop. The Boy Scout Camp North of Linton was well used along with summer camps, high adventure camps and civic projects.

I know it is a different time now and scouting doesn't hold the allure it once did. But in reminiscing with some of the old Scout gang that came of age under the leadership of these two able men, it reminded me of how important scouting was to a lot of now grown men.

I know one consideration in the "demise" or at least diminished role that Scouting has today is lack of qualified adults willing to step out to become leaders. Looking back on the time and effort that was required to be a Scout Master with a huge troop, I appreciate even more what these men and those like them sacrificed to keep the troop active and thriving.

Perhaps very few folks still around in Linton remember Warren Onken (besides former Scouts) and many may not recall that Bob was so active as well. But I couldn't let the passing of these two gentlemen go without at least acknowledging their contributions to so many young lives.
