County "IT man" getting bum rap

Monday, December 10, 2007

To the Editor:

I wish to inform the public about Greene County's "IT man" Mr. Randy Cleaver.

He has saved the county thousands of dollars over the past five years, and would continue to do so, had he been given the opportunity. He continues to offer the best in knowledge and service, even without a contract for 2008.

Greene County has a unified "server system" which requires a lot of knowledge and upkeep. This system is over five years old, which means the 24/7 usage it takes, has put it near its life expectancy. This system brought Greene County into the 21st century, but to stay there it needs an experienced and qualified technician, who is available 24/7.

Cleaver Cabling and computers is making the quotes in the paper which is actually "Dell computers." He is not marking up the prices, and you cannot get DELL Professional systems that are required for heavy county usages, at a lower price.

The money people think is going to Martinsville is really the pass through to Dell Computers. No mark-ups are added to Dell's Invoice. Buying in bulk does pay for itself.

The only money that is paid to Mr. Cleaver is his normal hourly rate.
