Hand-in-hand couples

bring a smile

To the Editor:

It seems like it was only yesterday.

I spend a lot of my time sitting on the bench outside of WalMart, watching people. My favorite pastime is observing people that are more obese than I am. Every once in a while, I see a sight so profound and so poignant, that no artist has ever painted such beauty. I see an older couple, older than I am, side by side, holding hands and the tenderness they share. It's almost heartbreaking. This reminds me of the old song, "I wandered today to the hills Maggie, to watch the scene below."

As I watch the various generations pass before me, my mind goes back to the times, when I was that age. The young seem to have a look of anticipation, where they expect exciting events. Those a little older have a look of determination, which seem to say "give me your best shot." Then comes the generation that has received that "best shot," some victorious, others show the signs of the strains and burdens. Finally, there is the couple hand in hand, that have survived together and now are nearing the end of their trial on earth, before being promoted into Heaven.

While observing such a couple one understands the meaning of marriage. They are enjoying their "last days" together, knowing that heartbreak is just a heartbeat away.

I wonder what their opinion is about divorce. They appear to be glad that they didn't consider divorce. Such a sight gives me a blessing, every time.

Thanks for listening.

Owensburg Cementery group says thanks

To the Editor:

The Owensburg Cemetery Association is so appreciative for donations and volunteer support we have received this year and in the past. Persons with reserved plots should review the rules posted at the cemetery as there are some rule changes that could affect them.

The board wants to thank Kerry Conway for giving a presentation about the Greene County Foundation. In 2006, Owensburg Cemetery Endowment Fund 262 was set up through the Greene County Foundation. If you would like to learn about this fund, contact the phone number or e-mail given below or directly contact the Foundation at 659-3142 or e-mail

gcfound@yahoo.com or their web site http://www.greenecountyfoundation.org/

The cemetery board is preparing a book about persons buried at Owensburg Cemetery. We have many old obituaries and are also including some census data. If you have any old obituaries, we would greatly appreciate having the information from them.

Pictures of most of the head stones have been put on the Internet. Contact the board if interested in viewing them.

Again, thanks to everyone for all they do. Out contact information is: 812-863-7924 or slh2@bluemarble.net.

Rotary Club go-kart races

a success because of help

The Linton Rotary Club held the 19th Annual Rotary Go-kart races at Humphreys Park on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21. We use the proceeds from this race to fund our scholarships to Linton-Stockton High School graduates.

The success of the races would not be possible without the sponsorship of many local businesses and people who sponsored us with financial support, and many hours of work, and supplies.
