Thank you for helping

with scholarship fund

To the Editor:

I would like to begin by thanking Nick Schneider for the article he wrote in regard to our son's scholarship (The Justin S. Mowery Memorial Scholarship Fund) on Sept. 23, 2008. His article, along with the Shakamak graduating class of 2006, Casey's General Store of Jasonville, Black Beauty Coal Company (Peabody Energy), the community, our family and friends made the first annual fundraising efforts a success.

We want to thank everyone who helped in any way. We had a few very generous donations made and we want to extend a very special thank you to those individuals.

Along with the success in the fundraising efforts we also had three new applicants that attended the MSHA classes required for a new miner at Vincennes University in November. We have one enrolled to attend classes in December. We were fortunate enough to be able to send three last year. Our goal is to be able to double that number this year and we're already over half way there. We will also be issuing a flight scholarship in January through Vincennes University.

We're planning to have annual fund raisers during the month September; however donations can be made throughout the year at any Bloomfield State Bank location. Vinyl window decals in three designs are still available for a $3 or $4 donation with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. (amount determined by the style chosen) Special arrangements are being made through Vincennes University for tax deferred donations.

If you have any questions regarding how to benefit from the scholarship, purchase a window decals or regarding donations, please feel free to contact us at 847-8290.

Thanks again to everyone for your support!

Business owners

are a class act

To the Editor:

Representing the Shakamak High School Class of 1983, early last summer I reserved the Old Bank Restaurant for our 25th class reunion to be held the end of September.

As many know, the restaurant abruptly closed in September. I was never contacted by the restaurant management of the closing of the business which was one week prior to our reservation. We searched out the person in charge during the closure and it was to no avail. The business had reverted back to the previous owners, Jerry and Gayle Margraf.

A classmate contacted Gayle to explain our predicament. The Margrafs went out of their way to make our reunion happen as scheduled. They opened the building as a private party, served us a delicious meal and graciously allowed my class to stay as late as they wanted to reminisce and visit.

I would like to publicly thank the Margrafs for their effort of going above and beyond. They did not take the reservation for our class nor were they currently even open for business in the Old Bank Restaurant building when they opened for our class reunion. Sadly, business etiquette such as our class experienced is rare in today's world. The Linton area should be proud to have them as business owners. The couple also owns and operates the Linton McDonalds restaurants.

Newly elected commissioner says thanks for support

To the Editor:

On Nov. 4, 2008, I was elected to the office of Commissioner of District 1 of Greene County.

This letter to you is to say thank you to all those who supported and voted for me. But that doesn't seem to me to be enough. It slides off the tongue too quick and easy. Just thank you!

It's hard for me to express the humility and obligation I feel toward everyone. There have been so many people who have expressed their confidence, trust and encouragement in me that I feel blessed.

I made no promises during my campaign except that the people of Greene County would be my first priority, and I would work hard and do the best I can every day.

I say a special thank you to my wife Bernadene, daughter Mona, Rose Sparks, Philip and Diane Holtsclaw, Janice and Kenny Reece, Fran and Greg Laubsch, three Eastern Greene High School girls, Mike and Rita Hennette, Tom and Patty Jones and all the unmentioned people who worked so hard to get me elected.

I couldn't have accomplished it without you.

Thank you sincerely.

Teams, coaches did

the right thing Friday night

To the Editor:

I just wanted people in Linton and Odon to know how proud I felt, seeing both teams come together in the middle of the field and kneel and pray for Jim.

Never have I ever been so moved, especially in this day and age when you are not to have God in the schools. Well let me tell you what, He was sure there Friday night and it was beautiful.

Thank you to both teams for putting aside differences and to do what was right and that was to care for another human being's life. We have some wonderful kids and coaches. Thank you and God Bless you all.

Go Miners!
