Lady Cards notch two wins over weekend

Monday, April 13, 2009

The Bloomfield softball team pounded out 22 runs on 26 hits in a pair of wins in their round robin tournament Saturday. The Lady Cards disposed of LaVille 18-7 and Vincennes Lincoln 4-0.

In the blowout win over LaVille, Kendra Spelts, Danielle Sichting, Siera Fuller and Amber VanDeventer each posted three hits. VanDeventer, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, drove in four runs as did Sichting. Brittany Major collected a hit and two RBIs, while Spelts and Fuller each drove in one run.

Ariel Fuller, Kelsie Spelts and Holly Zschiedrich rounded out the 16-hit attack for the Cards.

"We played a good game and had fun," Cardinals head coach Jessica Lauderdale said. "We had a lot of good hits and ran the bases well."

She also mentioned that although Sammi Kirby did not register any hits, that she laid down some good bunts and did a good job of moving runners along.

Zschiedrich was the starting pitcher for the Lady Cards. The junior, making her first appearance inside the circle, allowed four hits, issued three free passes and walked one.

"Holly pitched a good game," Lauderdale said. "She had a strong defense backing her up. We only made a couple of errors but the offense made up for that."

In the second game, the Cards scored all four runs in the fifth inning to record their third win in four games. The four runs was more than enough for starting pitcher Shelby Gott, who tied her own school record with 15 Ks for the game.

"Shelby did a great job on the mound tying her school record for strikeouts," Lauderdale said. "We played another good game and had fun doing so."

In addition to her fanning 15 batters, Gott only allowed two hits and one walk in her complete game shutout. With the win, Gott improved to 2-1 on the season.

Siera Fuller continued her torrid pace at the plate as she had a two-bagger in part of her second three-hit game of the day.

"Siera was strong once again at the plate for us," Lauderdale said.

Gott and Kelsie Spelts each produced two hits in the win, while Zschiedrich, Major and Sichting rounded out the 10-hit attack with one hit each. Sichting's hit was a two-run double.

The Lady Cards will be back in action on the diamond Tuesday when they host Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference foe Linton-Stockton Tuesday at 5 p.m.
