LOOGOOTEE -- Bloomfield girls' tennis team swept singles to come away with a 3-2 win over Barr-Reeve in the Loogootee Invitational Saturday.

Host Loogootee had little trouble in a 5-0 win over North Daviess to set up a rematch of last year's invitational final.

Bloomfield gave the Lions some competition in a couple of singles spots but Loogootee walked away with a 4-1 victory to claim the invitational title.

In the Barr-Reeve match, the Cardinal singles players breezed through to assure a team win. At No. 1 singles Bailey Maryfield disposed of Kacie James 6-4, 6-2. No. 2 player Sarah Miller and No. 3 player Emily Riggins disposed of their opponents with identical 6-3, 6-1 scores. Miller defeated Abby Pielemeier while Riggins beat Brittany Ash.

The No. 1 doubles team of Christina Neill and Rachel Toon dropped a close 6-2, 7-6 (5) match to Kristen Knepp and Kylie Sluder. Lindley Gremore and Meaghan Bucher were beaten by Devan Bullock and Jade Miller 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot.

In the championship match with Loogootee, Bloomfield's lone win came at No. 1 singles where Bailey Maryfield downed Emily Callihan 7-6(5), 1-6, 1-0(6). This match was a dog fight. Maryfield fought from behind in the first set to win in a tie break. Then Callahan came back strong to win the second set easily. In the super tie break for the match Maryfield jumped out to an early lead and held on to take the match.

The situation at the No. 2 singles position was similar to No. 1 but the team was different. It was Sarah Miller for the Cardinals that lost a close first set, came back strong to win the second set but drop the super tie break to lose the match. Miller was defeated by Andrea Vaupel 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(5).

Pia Brinkmann filled out the Cards singles lineup at No. 3 and was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Brittney Bateman.

Both doubles teams played better against strong, more experienced Loogootee teams than in the Barr-Reeve match but neither team could come away with a win. Christina Neill and Rachel Toon were bested by Sarah Allen and Valerie Wickman 6-3, 6-1 while Lindley Gremore and Meaghan Bucher were beaten by Kelli Potts and Ashten Matthews 6-4, 6-1. Both doubles teams showed improvement since the Edgewood match but there is still a lot of improvement that needs to be made.

Tuesday the Cards continue on the road to take on North Daviess on the Tony Steele Courts at 4:30 p.m.
