Summer food program coming to Linton

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

A summer food program is coming soon to Humphreys Park in Linton.

Pastor Mike Roth of the Saron Church in Linton provided details on the program --which is funded with a federal grant.

"The summer food service program provides nutritious meals to all children aged 18 and younger," he explained. "These meals provide essential nutrients for active, growing kids .To participate in the program kids just need to show up at the site."

Meals will be served at the park's west shelter house from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program runs from June 8 to Aug. 14 -- with the exception of June 29-July 3.

"We're going to hand out flyers at the school. Every Linton-Stockton school student will get one before the end of the (school) year," he added. "But to be honest it's not limited to Linton...our hope is if this goes well to eventually create several sites in Greene County."

Lyons, Worthington, Bloomfield and Jasonville could all be future sites of the summer food program, he added.

"If it (Linton) goes well and becomes a stand-alone site we can have up to 25 sites under us," Roth said.

A certified dietitian will oversee the menu and Linton's site will have one paid staff person and three to five volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering for the summer food program please call 847-9535 for further information.

The Linton Community Food Pantry -- which includes the Saron Church, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Linton First Christian Church and Linton First United Methodist Church -- is overseeing the summer food program this year.

  • That is a great idea! As a teacher I know there are students who only get that one good meal at school a day. This will be very beneficial to the kids!
