Lyons man questions Axe quote

To the Editor:

I couldn't help but notice the incredibly ignorant statement in a recent edition of the Viewpoints page in Nick Schneider's column about the Columbine shooting.

I realize that he was quoting Roger Axe when he said "it could happen here because of the accessibility of firearms and the social acceptance of guns in Greene County. It's part of our culture and way of life around here." What in blazes is that supposed to mean?

Rather than taking up half a page of newspaper explaining how ridiculous that statement was, I'll just use your same reasoning regarding the culture here in Greene County.

Another thing that is becoming socially acceptable in Greene County is Longaberger Basket bingo. You see those things going on all over the place anymore. I hope someone doesn't come storming into the newspaper office one day and beat someone to death with a Longaberger Basket. Those dang things are really becoming accessible to the average citizen these days.

Or, let's see, what else? How about golf carts. Those doggone things are another Greene County cultural phenomenon that you see everywhere now. I sure hope somebody doesn't crash one of those things through the front doors of WalMart and try to run over 25 people.

Come on Mr. Schneider, come on Mr. Axe you gentlemen are intelligent, educated people. How smart do you have to be to realize that it was whacked out crazies that had no moral sense of right or wrong to walk into a school and do what they did.

When I was in school you could have went out to the parking lot on any given day and found a firearm in probably a third of the vehicles (usually shotguns) and most of them visible through the window. I don't ever recall anyone shooting or even pointing a gun at anyone then.

I'm not a member of the NRA but have enough sense to realize that it's people who commit terrible and inexcusable acts of violence not inanimate objects.
