Education is more than going to class

To the Editor:

It seems like I lost my popularity in the coffeemate club since the election. Gone is the good-natured badgering and heckling. Perhaps the political events in the new administration are a factor.

I asked if we are better off now than we were four months ago. The silence is deafening. There is a noticeable chill in the air in that corner of McDonald's.

Maybe I was right.

Some people consider me to be a know-it-all. They are mistaken. I do not know it all. Everything I know was gleaned from the minds of those around me. My formal education ended after the eighth grade. Since then, I listen to others and learn from them. It took a long time to sort out the useful grain from the weed. Any knowledge I have was gleaned from others throughout conversation and reading. A wise person once observed that real learning begins after formal instructions cease.

A formal education does not mean that when a person finishes from his or her classes, that they know a lot. An education means we have the mental tools to learn.

If I'm wrong, forgive me. If I'm right, live with it!

Thank you for listening.
