To the Editor:

I would like to give a thank you to the

Greene County Council for their time and efforts they have put in -- which is not an easy task, I am sure.

They spent time and put a lot of work into doing what they could to get the budgets for 2010, in dollar amounts that would be within the regulations ordered by the state, and yet trying to leave each of the offices with the money it takes to run the office. And they were all concerned about having to lay people off and did what they could to not have to do that anywhere.

And I really appreciate John Wilkes, president of the council -- and all the others for reviewing the decision to eliminate my third deputy and put that back in place as it was. To do this, and still be able to cut expenses, I suggested we leave the deputy and do our tax billing in the office as oppose to having it done by a company for 2010. They agreed with my decision and I appreciate their support .

Most people don't realize the work involved by the council members to try to meet the state guidelines and then cover the costs of county expenses in each of the county entities -- trying to do all this and do it without having to raise property taxes. It truly takes time and effort on everyone's part.

Oftentimes, we all get somewhat aggravated with each other, I am sure, but we all have to work together to do what is best for the county and the taxpayers. I was glad to see that no one had to lose their job, but we never know what can happen at a later time.

So thanks again to each of you for your service.

Shelby Meurer

Greene County Treasurer
