Cockeye, Mr. A.

and Buzz

To the Editor:

Dugger's legends of the fall season were Cockeye, Mr. A. and Buzz. For almost anyone over age 40 that lives in Sullivan County you probably know their last names. One worked for Rogers, one was a high school principal and one was a coal miner. I am sure that they all loved their work, but they all really loved their time away from work, especially during retirement.

Bird dogs, rabbit dogs and fishing poles were all very important for these three men. A couple of them even liked a visit to the golf course. Hilda, Higgens, Deputy Dog and Sammy were four beagles that would run rabbits all day and had to be caught at dark to go home. Mr. A. would say, "Cockeye you are so ornery that your dogs won't even come to you!"

My young son and I were lucky to be fishing with Mr. A. the day that the young son caught a one and a half pound bluegill. He still remembers that day with Mr. A.

I played golf with Buzz a few times and he was down the middle with almost every shot. We even took some cash from two other gentlemen (J.J. & T.R.) one time in a nine-hole match. Some say that you could hear Buzz three holes away.

As the weather cools, the leaves blow, and frost is near, I think about these three guys as my old dog and I are enjoying a walk in the woods. They truly loved their outdoor activities much like I do. I will not forget the good times that I had with them chasing rabbit dogs, fishing and on the golf course. They made a lasting impression on me. If anyone would like to know their last names ask about any old guy from Dugger.
