Now is a great time

to quit smoking

To the Editor:

The Jan. 4 episode of "The Doctors" (a daytime television show that reaches over 3 million viewers) focused on New Year's resolutions, including quitting tobacco use. The following are some of the reasons they suggested why a person should quit:

1. The financial costs of smoking to an individual.

2. The effects of smoking (blood pressure, cancer, cardio-vascular, osteoporosis)

3. They showed models of healthy lungs vs. smokers' lungs and discussed the differences.

4. They demonstrated some medical tests that can measure the effect that smoking has on an individual.

5. They stressed that it is an addiction and very hard to quit.

6. They gave tips to quit, including:

a. Commit

b. Get professional help

c. Change your environment -- remove things that are smoking triggers

d. Medications

7. Showed the "Become an Ex" tool kit (BecomeAnEx.org)

8. Shared the 1-800-Quit-Now number

9. Referred people to their Web site for more information

I encourage any of your readers who made this a New Year's resolution but are struggling with getting started to call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Take that first step. After all, there's never been a better time to quit!

Gallion family says thanks for support

To the Editor:

On behalf of my family, I would like to take this opportunity to personally express our sincere gratitude for your benefit donation, continued support, prayers and generosity.

On Jan. 1, the girls were 4 months old. In many ways, it seems like only yesterday that they were born. Each day has been a huge milestone in their progression/development and Riley Hospital and its staff have been incredible.

Hope Jaye now weighs 10 pounds and 4 ounces; is an extremely happy baby and is currently waiting on another surgery. Grace Elizabeth weighs 8 pounds and 7 ounces and well what can I say; she loves attention and continues to be exuberated from her breathing apparatuses and feeding tube.

In closing, Greene County has always and will continue to be a community that comes together to help anyone, in anyway. It is a community of "Angels" loving and caring individuals whom we pass each and every day. They are family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances and even strangers.

Your thoughtfulness is truly appreciated and will always be remembered.

With sincere regards,

Micah (Mensch) Gallion
