Letters to the Editor
Thank you for helping with library program
To the Editor:
You have heard "It takes a village to raise a child." Well, I would like to change that to "It takes a community to raise a reader" and thanks to the wonderful community we live in we had a great reading program this summer.
We had the schools who encouraged: Class visit, field trips, promotional displays at the schools, and Mrs. Gaines who let her African albino frog vacation with us to promote the "Make a Splash" theme.
Parents, grandparents, and sitters made the effort to get children to the programs and to support the reading club activities at home.
Dee Robinson brought us monarch caterpillars to hatch, and her grandsons Brett and Drew made sure we had plenty of milkweed leaves for them to eat.
Staff went above and beyond, filling tons of water balloons, feeding caterpillars, care and cleaning of the frog, catching tadpoles, cleaning the tadpole tank, getting soaked at the Water Show, back-up photographers, extra pair of hands at storytimes, helping with the Luaus, donating prizes, support for all of our crazy ideas and generally pitching in where needed.
We had over 400 children registered for the reading club, over 120 children received free books and many went on to receive other prizes. We had good attendance at the storytimes and the Magic Show and Water Show drew big crowds. Scavenger hunts in the library had participation of between 50-100 children each week. Crafty Kids drew 15-30 on Mondays in July.
