Wednesday, March 30

* Trinity Lutheran Church will observe Lenten Wednesday -- with a hunger appeal supper from 6:10 -6:50 p.m. based on the USA, food stamp supper, its foods and needs. Ephesians Discovery is also slated from 7 - 8 p.m. with a focus on Chapter 3: "Paul's prayer that the church be the body of Christ in the world." The church is located on State Road 54 East in Linton.

* "Texting and Driving Don't Mix" -- a free program for parents will be held from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Eastern Greene High School cafeteria.

Thursday, March 31

* Emily Ann Thompson will share the sound of Celtic fiddling at 7 p.m. at the Greene County Carnegie. The concert is being sponsored by the Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center of Greene County, the Up Right Studio, Linton-Stockton Elementary Music and the Linton Gamma Rho chapter of Psi Iota Xi Sorority. There will be a donation box at the door to help cover the expenses of the musicians and add to the "new furnace fund" for the Carnegie. Those donating to the evening will be entered into the drawing for some very fine Irish door prizes. Greene County artists will also have their work for sale. Light refreshment of "Irish Stew and Soda Bread" washed down with ginger ale will be served for $1.

* The Bloomfield Board of School Trustees will meet in regular monthly session at 7 p.m. in the junior high conference room.

* The 10th annual basket/tool bingo will be held at the Lyons Community Building. Special drawing for advanced ticket holders. Food and door prizes. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Hearing Aid Services in Linton, Cathy's Beauty Salon in Switz City and Becky's Salon in Lyons. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 6:30 p.m.

* Consumer & Family Science Spring Conference will be held at Ivy Tech State College in Terre Haute. Contact Polly Gettinger at 659- 2122 for further information. Each Extension Homemakers Club is encouraged to have members attend the sessions.

Friday, April 1

* The Jasonville Senior Center will hold a biscuit and sausage gravy breakfast from 7 - 9:30 a.m. Carry out and other items are also available. The center is located at 145 S. Lawton St.

* A hamburger and hot-dog benefit dinner-- benefiting Bill Sperling and family -- will be from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer. Cost is $5 per plate. For more information contact Ashley ay (812) 829-2331.

* The Jasonville American Legion will have a basket bingo at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Advance tickets may be purchased by calling Jenny Burdette at 798-1271. All proceeds go to the Shakamak Youth League.

* The 50th annual John L. Lewis Day celebration dinner will be at 11 a.m. (Oakland City time) at the American Legion in Oakland City. All retired miners and their spouses as well as widows and widowers of retired miners are welcome to attend.

Saturday, April 2

* House of Prayer Eastern Greene will host a community day event at its new building. Doors will open at 8 a.m. for the sale of non-clothing yard sale items, baked goods and handmade crafts. Concessions will be available. Chili supper to follow at 5 p.m. with live music at 6 p.m. The church is located at 1467 South State Road 45 -- which is one mile south of Cincinnati.

* The Worthington VFW Post 7117 will have an open house with the men's auxiliary to the post hosting a Relay for Life hog roast at noon with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Event also includes the following: 'kornhole' tourney at 3 p.m., entertainment from 8 p.m. - midnight by Rob Barry and the Rebel Storm as well as a raffle. For more information call (812) 875-2504.

* The Lawrence County Rock, Mineral and Fossil Club; with members from all over south-central Indiana; will meet at 7 p.m. at the Company Concourse (1402 H. St.) in Bedford. A program on knapping and stone tools will be presented by a representative of the DNR, sponsored by Ed and Terri Devoe. Visitors are always welcome. * Marco United Methodist Church will hold its fish fry from 4 p.m. - ? Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12. It will be an all-you-can-eat buffet. Menu includes the following: fish (breaded and battered), potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, dessert, coffee or iced tea. Stairlift is available for easy access to basement. Gospel singing with "For His Glory and By His Wounds" will be at 5 p.m.

* VBS U, a Vacation Bible School training and networking event, will be hosted at Whosoever Will Full Gospel Church in Dugger. * Shelburn Church of God will have a chicken noodle dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Price will be $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. Menu includes the following: noodles, mashed potatoes, vegetable or salad and drink. Delivery available to home and business, to pre-order call (812) 251-7429 by March 30. This is a fundraiser for the church food pantry.

* Ribbon cutting and open house at the new Jasonville Fire Department Station, located just west of the current fire house. Ribbon cutting is at 3 p.m., followed from 4-7 p.m. by a fish fry at the old fire station.

* A Wine and Cheese in the Stacks event is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. at the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene Library. Proceeds benefit the Greene County Literacy Coalition. For tickets call Beth or John at 384-4125. Tickets are $15 each or two for $25. There will be live music and food.

* Bloomfield Tri Kappa will have its spring fashion show and brunch at the Bloomfield First Baptist Church in the CLC building. Doors open at 9:45 a.m. Enjoy food, vendors and watch the show. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased by any Tri Kappa members or by calling Jackie at 384-0441.

* The 8th Annual White River Valley Antique Association Swap Meet will be from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Elnora. Event to include the following: garden tractors, gas engines, tractors, steel wheels, implements, farm toys, tools, parts, crafts and everything in between. Dealer set-up fee is $20. * The Greene County General Hospital Auxiliary will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the conference room at the Greene County General Hospital.

* "Keeping our Communities Safe from Drugs" a program aimed at parents will be from 7 - 8 p.m. at the White River Valley cafeteria.

Tuesday, April 5

* Greene County Democrat Club will meet at Pizza Villa in Jasonville at 6 p.m.

* The Linton-Stockton High School Class of 2012 is hosting a Longaberger basket bingo at the Linton Elks. Doors open at 5:30 P.M. and the bingo starts at 6:30 p.m.

* This year, the Linton Public Library is updating its long-range plan as required by the Indiana State Library Board. As a part of that process, the library will host a community meeting from 7 - 8 p.m. in the program room. The meeting is to gather input and feedback about its current services, as well as ideas about improving or expanding the basic and extended services of the library. The meeting will be facilitated by certified planning consultant, David Benefiel, AICP of Linton. Interested persons, library patrons, community leaders, or area youth are encouraged to attend. Wednesday, April 6

* Trinity Lutheran Church will observe Lenten Wednesday -- with a hunger awareness meal from 6:10 -6:50 p.m. based on the Asia (Bangladesh), its foods and needs. Ephesians Discovery is also slated from 7 - 8 p.m. with a focus on Chapter 4: "Walk worthy of the vocation to which you are called." The church is located on State Road 54 East in Linton.

* "Body Safety" a program aimed at parents -- which will instruct them on how to teach body safety to their children -- will be from 7 - 8 p.m. at the Bloomfield School Cafeteria.

* "One Laugh at a Time" a program aimed at parents with a focus on bridging the child-parent-school gap will be from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Linton-Stockton High School auditoria.

Saturday, April 9

* Disaster Survival Preparedness Training will be offered from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Whosoever Will Full Gospel Church in Dugger. Lunch will be provided. Cost is $10 -- which covers lunch and reference materials. Representatives from local, state, federal, DOD, law and fire agencies will present a wide variety of topics.

* Bloomfield United Methodist Church (60 W. Main) will host a Jonah Fish Fry from 4-7 p.m. The menu includes: Fish (all-you-care-to-eat), sides, dessert, and drink. Meals cost $7.50 per adult, $4/children for ages 5-12, and free for younger than 5. Proceeds go toward Bloomfield UMC youth programs.

* The Crane VFW annual Easter egg hunt, for children ages 0 to 12 years of age, will be at 1 p.m.

* The Glenburn Home Patriotic Tribute, a rehab fundraiser, will include dinner at 6 p.m. and music by Bruce Borders and band at 6:30 p.m. at the Linton Elks. Tickets are $30 with a table of six being available for $150. Silent auction and drawings to also be held.

* Mineral United Methodist Church will have revival April 10 - 12 with Jim Roach of Bloomington serving as guest speaker.

Tuesday, April 12

* The Greene County Veterans Council will meet at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post 196 in Bloomfield.

* "ABCs of Parenting Today's Teens" a program aimed at parents with a focus on Internet safety and Cyber bullying will be from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Shakamak High School media center.

Saturday, April 16

* Worthington Garden Club's annual plant auction will be from 10 a.m. - noon at the Worthington Park Community Building. The auction raises money for beautification projects around Worthington. Hardy perennials from members' gardens, garden supplies and food will be available. Contact Rhonda Lieske at 875-8811 for further details.

* The Greene County Veterans Council will meet at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post #22 in Linton.

Saturday, May 21

* The city of Linton will open the community to bargain hunters, collectors, and avid 'garage-salers' from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. during the third annual Linton city-wide sale. Sale will be held rain or shine. The Linton Public Library will rent booth space for those of you who may live in rural areas surrounding the city or may need space for your organization to host a fundraiser. * The Linton-Stockton class of 2001 will celebrate its 10th year reunion at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Park -- which is located on County Road 200 East in rural Linton. For more information contact Hannah Kinnett at (812) 798-1138, Kela (Stephens) Delph at (812) 381-2000 or Laurie (Bondurant) Wagner at (812) 798-4881. Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple. Deadline to RSVP is June 1. Fee will include food, drinks and entertainment.

Ongoing Events

* The First Church of God in Linton is selling homemade half-pound Easter eggs. Flavors include the following: coconut, cherry and peanut butter. Cost is $5 each. Order now through April 10. * It is time to enroll students for the 2011-12 Linton-Stockton kindergarten classes. During the month of March the school needs to know the names of students who will be entering kindergarten next school year. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2011 are eligible to enroll. Enrollment forms may be picked up in the elementary office.

* The Clay County WIC program is in Jasonville at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

* VFW Post 7118 in Linton needs eligible members to join men's auxiliary. Bring required form. Contact post with eligibility questions at 847-9016 or visit the post 190 South Main St.

* Greene County General Hospital has announced that two $500 scholarships will be awarded in May: Dr. Mathias Mount and Dr. Kenneth Broshears scholarships. Dr. Mount was a physician from Bloomfield, and Dr. Broshears was a physician from Linton. The Dr. Mount Scholarship is given to a Greene County senior interested in pursing a healthcare career. The Dr. Broshears Scholarship is given to a student in high school or college interested in pursing a healthcare career. Applications can be picked up at the Greene County Ambulance Office in Bloomfield, the Greene County Daily World office in Linton, or in the administration office at Greene County General Hospital in Linton.

* The Peavey Cemetery Board will begin spring clean-up April 1. Please remove wreaths or winter decorations that will interfere with mowing before that date. Memorial decorations that interfere with mowing should be removed prior to June 15.

* Spring clean-up at Lebanon Cemetery has begun. Graves should be cleared off by March 31. Items may remain on the stone but decorations not removed from the grave will be disposed of. If you are decorating using a shepherd's hook, please place it to the side of the stone for mowing purposes. Any questions call 798-7023.

* The 2011 Miner Discount Cards are available at the reduced rate of $2 and can be purchased at Regions Bank in downtown Linton.

* The pastors of the churches which comprise the Central Greene County Ministerial Association have mapped out the course for the upcoming Lenten season and Holy Week observances. Several special events are planned. They include the following: Saturday, March 26-- Lenten Breakfast at Mineral UMC; Saturday, April 2 -- Lenten Breakfast at First Christian; Saturday, April 9 -- Lenten Breakfast at First Baptist; Saturday, April 16 -- Lenten Breakfast at Tulip Church Of God (with Word Of Life Fellowship); Friday, April 22 -- Community Good Friday Service at First Presbyterian 7 p.m.; Sunday, April 24 -- Community Easter Sunrise Service at First Christian 7 a.m. The Lenten breakfasts all begin at 8 a.m. and end by 9 a.m. Free-will offerings will be received at each of the breakfasts to support the various ministries and missions of the CGCMA. * Officials at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles have announced that the Linton and Bloomfield license branches will have new hours of operation effective Jan. 31. The Linton license branch will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bloomfield license branch will be open on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers needing to conduct business with the BMV without visiting a license branch can visit the improved myBMV.com website or visit a BMV partner location. Some transactions can also be completed by phone through the BMV Customer Service Center at 1-888-692-6841.

* The Lyons Community Pantry at the Lyons United Methodist Church will be open from 3 - 6 p.m. the second Thursday of every month.

* Free tax help is available through a program sponsored by the IRS and AARP for low income, handicapped or elderly in filing their federal and state income tax returns. Volunteers for TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) have been certified to fill out forms as well as schedules. Free electronic filing will be available at all locations. When visiting the tax sites, taxpayers should bring a copy of their 2009 return and proof of 2010 income. Weather permitting dates and sites are: Bloomfield Highrise -- April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon; Bloomfield Library -- April 2 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.; Bloomfield Meadowlark Apartments -- March 16 from 9 - 11 a.m.; Glenburn Home community room (Linton) -- March 17, 24 and April 7 from 9 a.m. ; Worthington Senior Center -- March 15 from 9 a.m. - noon

* The newly appointed Worthington Park Board will host meetings at 6 p.m. on each first Wednesday of the month at the Worthington Municipal Building in downtown Worthington. The public is welcome to attend.

* Mineral United Methodist Church will have Bible study from 7 - 8 p.m. on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

* The Alzheimer's Support Group meeting will be at the Switz City Christian Church fellowship hall on State Road 54 in Switz City. The meeting will be the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. If you have questions, call 798-1589.

* The mobile food pantry will be at the Jasonville United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to ? on the first Wednesday of the month.

* The Back Door Food Pantry is open from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month.

* Narcotics Anonymous will meet Saturdays at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church on State Road 54 East. There will be open discussion and all are welcome.

* Lebanon Baptist Food Pantry will only be open on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m.

* The Refuge Assembly of God food pantry will be open every Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. to assist those living in Bloomfield. To donate, please contact Trina at 384-8093 during the pantry's open hours.

* The Mineral Christian Men's Group meets at 8 a.m. every third Saturday of the month at the Mineral Community Building.

* House of Grace Coffee House will offer fellowship, food, worship and youth classes. The church is located at 792 S. Section St. in Dugger.

* The Pleasantville United Methodist Church food pantry is now open on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10:30 a.m. - noon.

* The Lyons First Christian Church youth group meets at 6 p.m. on Mondays at the church's East Broad Street location.
