Thunderbirds take out Cards

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Zak Eckerle and Nathan Cobine combined to throw a no-hitter as Eastern Greene defeated host Bloomfield 4-2 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference baseball game Friday.

Eastern Greene improved to 5-9 overall, 3-2 in the SWIAC. The Cardinals dropped to 0-14, 0-5.

"Zak got hit on the hand and couldn't find the plate after that," said Eastern Greene coach Trevor McConnell. "Nathan came in and pitched really well. We have seen him show potential but this was one of the first times that he has put it all together on the mound."

Mike Love hit a home run and Jake Johnson doubled for the winners. Johnson finished 2-for-4.

Zak Query pitched a complete game and suffered the loss for the Cards. He allowed seven hits.

"It was a hard fought game by both teams," said Bloomfield coach Mark Bartlow. "We look forward to having another chance to play them in the sectional."

The Cards will play at WRV at 7 p.m. Monday.

EGHS will host Eminence in a double-header at 1 p.m. Saturday (today).
