Shakamak picks up two wins

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Shakamak pushed its record to 8-4 overall with two wins at home Friday.

The Laker baseball team defeated Union (Dugger) 15-4 in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game and then defeated Loogootee 7-3 in the nightcap. The SWIAC game was halted via the 10-run rule after five innings.

"We did not play too badly in the first game until the fifth inning," said Laker coach Chip Sweet. "Then we absolutely stunk it up. It was embarrassing we couldn't close it out, but we did what we had to do to get the win.

"Loogootee has a really nice club this year. They have more experience. That was a good win."

The Lakers broke open the conference game with 11 runs in the fourth.

Brett Yeryar pitched the first four innings to earn the victory, his second in three decisions. Kyler Fulford pitched the fifth.

Weston Inman was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bulldogs, who slipped to 0-7, 0-3.

Mike Foglesong, Emery Heady, Tanner Reynolds and Jacob Todd scored the four Bulldog runs. Ethan Secrest and Tanner Reynolds each had a single.

Patrick Green had a homer and double for the Lakers. Brock Dowell also doubled.

Dowell scattered six hits and pitched a complete game against the Lions, earning his fourth win against one loss.

Dowell helped his own cause with a double.

The Bulldogs will play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (today) at Sullivan. The Lakers will host Linton-Stockton at 11 a.m. Saturday (today).
