BHS wins girls SWIAC meet, Linton second in both

Bloomfield's Emily Montoya goes airborne during a long jump attempt Friday at the conference track and field meet at Linton-Stockton. She helped the Lady Cards win the SWIAC title.(Shad Cox/ Greene County Daily World).

The girls title came down to the final race at Friday's Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference track meet while the boy's race was decided earlier at the Charlie Hoskins Track at Roy Williams Field in Linton.

The girls team totals saw Bloomfield finish with 127.5 points, Linton-Stockton with 125.5 for second place followed by Eastern Greene (122.5), Shakamak (104), North Daviess (61), North Central (35), Clay City (23.5) and White River Valley (14).

Clay City claimed the top spot in the boys race with 112 points followed by the Miners (95), Eastern Greene (89), White River Valley (87), Bloomfield (89), North Daviess (80), North Central (49) and Shakamak (19).

Led by senior Julie Riggins, the Lady Cardinals pulled off the upset over defending champion Linton-Stockton by finishing second in the 1,600 meter relay, one spot ahead of the Lady Miners.

The win secured the title for Steve Jones' Lady Cardinals and knocked Linton-Stockton from the perch they had held for the last 13 years.

"I'm speechless, I almost don't know what to say," Jones said after learning his team had clinched the crown. "Almost every single one of them had a personal best. The girls had PR's in almost every event and they doubled up -- they just pulled together."

To add to the success of the Lady Cardinals, Riggins -- along with North Daviess' Jess Tribby -- earned the Most Valuable Runner Award for the meet.

Her wins in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races along with being a member of two relays gave her the honor.

"Not bad for her second meet back," Jones said referring to an injury that had kept her sidelined.

Linton-Stockton's Kent Helton was among the competitors in the boys long jump event during the SWIAC track and field meet at Charlie Hoskins Track Friday at Linton. (Shad Cox/Greene County Daily World).

Riggins herself was pleased and surprised in earning the honor.

"I'm kind of shocked," she said. "I didn't think I'd do as well coming off an injury. And I'm really proud of this team as well -- everybody did great."

For Linton-Stockton coach Aaron Lynn the meet was successful in spite of not topping either field and seeing his girl's team dominance of the event come to a halt.

"Obviously second place you certainly can't complain about," Lynn said afterwards. "But on the girls side when you're that close it hurts that much more.

"And when you're sitting on that many in a row that we've won, it's disappointing for the girls."

One meet record was bested as the Bloomfield boys 3,200 relay team of Kyle Smith, Aaron Brown, Conner Gadberry and Jake Phegley combined to post a mark of 8 minutes, 38.12 seconds.

It surpassed the old mark held by a team from Eastern Greene in 2002.

The Greene County Championship will be conducted on the same track Friday, May 13.

  • Congrats to Bloomfield girls! It is amazing what a group of motivated girls can do with proper coaching.

Several years ago - they were lucky to have enough numbers to even have a team.

Great job Lady Cards! Great job Coach Jones!

Also, boys well done. Very competitive season!
