Eastern Greene earns 29th win

Thursday, October 13, 2011

The Class 2A No. 3 Eastern Greene High School volleyball team cruised past visiting Monrovia by the scores of 25-9, 25-8, 25-8 to conclude the regular season Thursday night.

It was victory No. 29, compared to four losses, for the Lady Thunderbirds.

"The girls played well tonight," said EGHS coach Gina Ingram. "But we did get off to a shaky start in sets one and three. We made some bad passes.

"In set two, we jumped out to a 15-2 lead. It was good to get a win on senior night and play well in our last match before the sectional."

The Lady Thunderbirds were 71 of 73 serving with nine aces.

Brittany Igel was 25 of 26 on serve and had six aces, four in set three.

Darci Abell made 17 of 17, Casie Divine was 10-for-10, Leanna Bailey 9 of 9, Scottie Ingram was 6 of 6 and Peyton Gilliatt made 4 of 5.

"We served very aggressively," said Ingram. "Brittany served well, as did Darcy and all of the girls.

"Darcy had 11 digs and did a nice job defensively. Brittany had five kills. Sometimes Darcy and Brittany don't have impressive stats because they are back there serving for long stretches."

The junior varsity won 15-25, 25-23, 15-14.

Eastern Greene will be hosting the Class 2A Sectional. The two-time defending champs will begin tournament play at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday against North Knox.
