Now is the time

to quit smoking

To the Editor:

Every year about this time, people begin thinking about the new year and all the changes they can make in their lives.

Some people make a New Year's resolution to quit using tobacco. Nearly 48 million Americans age 18 years and older smoke. Of these, 70% (nearly 34 million smokers) want to quit, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

This year 1.3 million smokers will successfully quit. Why do 34 million want to quit but only a small fraction actually succeed? The answer is most people do not know how to quit. Quitting tobacco is very hard! Deciding that you want to quit is the first step. Believing you can quit is the most important step.

If you are ready to quit, getting professional help will improve your chances of success. Talk to your doctor.

Call the free Indiana Tobacco Quitline -- 1-800- QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), and/or join the free tobacco cessation classes offered to anyone in Greene County 18 years of age and older.

Classes will be held at the Greene County General Hospital on Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. starting Jan. 17. Free Nicotine replacement is provided by the Greene County Health Department, and snacks will be provided by the Greene County General Hospital.

To register call 847-9502. Happy New Year!

Thank you for

special birthday

To the Editor:

Thank you for the cards, notes and gifts in my honor as I celebrated my 100th birthday.

The flowers were beautiful and I was delighted to visit with so many friends at the open house.

I wish all of you many happy birthdays.

Sincerely,
