Lacey Gilbert's two-out double in the fourth inning scored Kelsey Pilant and Meghan Miller with the go-ahead runs as Shakamak snapped a five-game losing streak, defeating visiting Sullivan 3-1 Thursday at Jasonville in a high school softball game.

The Lady Lakers improved to 5-6 while Sullivan suffered just its second loss.

"This was a good win against a quality team. They have had some good wins," said Shakamak coach B.A. Shipman. "This was a good win for us. It was good to snap our losing streak.

"Lacey came up with a timely hit."

Kelsey Samm and Laura Sue Irons combined to toss a four-hitter. Samm (4-3) gave up one unearned run in her five innings of work, walking two.

Irons earned her third save as she pitched two hitless innings in relief. She struck out one and issued no walks.

"We had great pitching tonight," said Shipman. "Kelsey did a good job at the start and Irons closed it out."

Jazmine Martin was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Mikayla Crane doubled.

Samm helped her own cause with a run-scoring single in the first inning.

Amber Chesterfield and Pilant both had two hits.

Sullivan prevailed in the junior varsity game 14-8.

Shakamak will be off until Monday when they host Eastern Greene in a conference game.
